Highlight
This contemporary retrospective cohort study of 4,299 individuals with type 1 diabetes diagnosed before age 35 between 2000–2022 revealed:
- Type 1 diabetes remains associated with a significantly increased all-cause mortality risk (HR 3.66) compared to matched controls.
- Excess mortality burden is disproportionately greater among females, with an adjusted hazard ratio of 8.40 vs. 2.90 in males despite higher absolute mortality rates in males.
- Mortality risk has declined for those diagnosed in the more recent period (2011-2022), suggesting benefits from advanced therapeutic care.
