Community- and Family-Based Intervention Successfully Lowers Blood Pressure in Rural China: Evidence from a Cluster-Randomized Trial

Background: Addressing Hypertension Beyond Individual Treatment

Hypertension is a leading modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular disease globally, contributing substantially to morbidity and mortality. Traditional approaches to hypertension control largely focus on identifying and treating individuals with established hypertension. However, shifting the entire population’s blood pressure distribution toward healthier levels may offer a more effective strategy to reduce cardiovascular risk at a population level. Rural China, with its high burden of hypertension and limited healthcare resources, presents an important setting to test this population-based approach.
