Recent mechanical risk factors for venous thrombosis occurring within 14 days before stroke are independently associated with young-onset cryptogenic ischemic stroke (CIS).
This association is strongest in adults aged 18 to 39 and is accentuated in the presence of a clinically relevant patent foramen ovale (PFO).
Mechanical risk factors occurring beyond 14 days prior do not show a significant association, and thrombophilia markers do not explain this risk.
The findings highlight the need for thorough assessment of recent mechanical venous thrombosis triggers and potential PFO screening in young cryptogenic stroke patients.
